Annual Fundraiser, Wine on Wayzata Bay raises money for the Wayzata Community Sailing Center

Charitable wine, the best vintage.

Wine on Wayzata Bay is an annual fundraiser hosted by the Wayzata Yacht Club to benefit the nonprofit Wayzata Community Sailing Center (read more about the center on page 24).

At this year’s ninth annual event, guests will sample over 100 different wines made available by presenting sponsor Wayzata Wine & Spirits and dine on appetizers from lake area restaurants like Lord Fletcher’s, Jake O’Connor’s and District Fresh Kitchen + Bar, all while enjoying live music from pianist Benny Weinbeck.

“Guests will enjoy a wine experience like no other in the metro, because it’s not in your typical hotel or conference space,” says Barbara Speltz, co-chair of Wine on Wayzata Bay. “It’s out in the fresh air of Lake Minnetonka.”

There will also be a number of games “to bring out the pirate in you,” says Speltz. One game in particular, Boat-Load o’ Wine, lets players take their pick of several delicious bottles. Each $20 game ticket allows participants a chance to win a special wine or another prize. Replacing the usual silent auction will be a nautical-themed super raffle.

Members of the Wayzata Yacht Club will also take guests for 20-minute boat cruises until sunset. “A tip would be, if you want a boat ride, one of the first things that you should do is get in and sign up for one,” says Elli Ansari, Wayzata Community Sailing Center volunteer committee member.

“Our fundraiser keeps all the costs more accessible to more kids,” explains Speltz. Wine on Wayzata Bay is the largest annual fundraiser for the Wayzata Community Sailing Center, providing funding for its general operations, including staffing costs and costs to maintain boats and safety equipment. Speltz says that last year they were able to raise $30,000; their goal for this year is $40,000.
