Alfred Harrison and Ingrid Lenz Harrison Donate Outdoor Artwork to the Arboretum

A Wayzata couple donates more than 20 pieces of sculpture to the Arboretum.

To further beautify the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Wayzata residents Alfred Harrison and Ingrid Lenz Harrison recently donated more than 20 outdoor sculptures to be displayed along Three-Mile Drive. The Arboretum has arranged these pieces on a hillside and will open their new garden to visitors early this summer.

The Harrisons began collecting art soon after they were married in 1964. The early stages of their collection began with lithographs and prints and later evolved to include paintings, sculpture and other works of art. The couple began assembling their outdoor sculpture collection in 1988.

Alfred Harrison says, “My wife and I are well into retirement. We wanted to find the perfect place for these pieces rather than leave that task to our children after we’re gone. We’ve determined the arboretum is a wonderful location. They’ve displayed the artwork in a walkable sculpture garden that can be seen from the road. We’re thrilled with the thought of hundreds of people enjoying these sculptures as they drive by or stop for a stroll.”

Renowned sculptors from Switzerland, Germany, England, Italy, Zimbabwe, Argentina and America created these large, mostly modernist sculptures. Materials including bronze, copper, marble, limestone, stainless steel and iron are molded, twisted, chiseled and welded into some of the most beautiful structures you can imagine. arboretum.umn.edu
